Frequently Asked Questions

What is minor ops lighting in veterinary practices?

Minor ops lighting is a specialised form of medical lighting specifically designed for minor surgical procedures and treatments in veterinary environments. Minor operations can be classed as wound care, dental work, suturing, and routine procedures that require more precision than general examinations.

What level of illumination (LUX) is required for minor veterinary procedures?

Typically, minor veterinary procedures require a level of illumination between 30,000 and 80,000 LUX, and it depends on the complexity of the procedure and the working distance. Low range illumination (30,000-60,000 LUX) is considered suitable for examinations and simple procedures, and high range illumination (60,000-80,000 LUX) is considered better for more detailed surgical work.

What mounting options are available for minor ops lighting?

There are several mounting configurations available for minor ops lighting that cater to a variety of environments, including:

  • Ceiling-mounted systems: best suited to procedure rooms and surgical theatres, offering unobstructed lighting
  • Wall-mounted lights: more suitable for smaller treatment rooms or rooms where space is more restricted
  • Mobile units: better suited for use in multiple rooms as can be moved between workstations

How do I choose the right minor ops lighting for my practice?

When considering what minor ops lighting is best for your facility, it’s important to consider these key factors:

  • Light intensity – does the LUX meet the requirements for your facility?
  • Colour rendering (CRI) – helps distinguish between flesh and blood
  • Adjustability – dimming and flexibility improves overall usability
  • Mounting type – does the light position assist the types of the procedure performed and facility space?
  • Heat output – LED lights produce significantly less heat, reducing the overall temperature of the room
  • Beam quality – the aim is to have uniform, shadow-free illumination

How long do LED veterinary procedure lights last?

LED lights last significantly longer than incandescent bulbs, with modern veterinary procedure lights lasting between 40,000-60,000 hours, and some models even exceeding this range. This results in reduced replacement costs and lower maintenance requirements whilst providing energy efficiency and minimal heat output.
